The Buckland Southerst Gallery opened its doors in April of 1999. It was the union of Mary Southerst and Richard Buckland - partners in life and now in business. Mary opened her first gallery in Vancouver in 1972; from there she moved to Spain where she worked in a gallery for 5 years. Upon returning home, she managed a prominent gallery in West Vancouver for 16 years. Mary's next project was retirement, which was short-lived, and in 1999 she and Richard took over the space of a former framing shop. Richard, with a background in carpentry, worked his magic and created a lovely intimate gallery.
From the beginning Mary's aim was to hang quality art without too high a price tag, and also to assist artists in establishing themselves. Having been in the art world so long, many artists knew her and she soon attracted a select group. A number of these artists, though now Canadian, have international roots - adding a diversity and flair to the collections. It is an eclectic gallery - with a wide range of styles. After your virtual tour, come and visit our gallery firsthand - browse around, chat with the owner, pat the dog, and experience the delights of art up close and personal.
